Having a small wrestling team can cause huge challenges; a major one is a lack of students to fill weight classes. If there aren’t any wrestlers in a weight class from a team, and the opposing team has wrestlers in that class, they will gain points from forfeits. For Freedom, that means points can be lost from not having enough people. The individual athletes also have the worry of not making their weight class and cutting or gaining weight. Daily practice as well as weekly tournaments and matches allow the team to do a lot of bonding. Junior Matt Pavlick said his favorite part of wrestling would have to be “all the fun with the team.” With all the time they spend together, they are very close-knit. “[Everyone coming out to support us] makes a big difference,” Senior Kurt Kitzman said. “If there’s a bunch of people in the crowd, it gets everyone hyped up.” This year has been Senior Boe Bonzo’s fourth year in a row winning MACs. “It’s cool to be in a club of 11 people who’ve won four years straight in 45 years,” Bonzo said. The wrestlers would like to encourage everyone to go out to support them at matches, especially their last one Feb. 6 at 7:00 p.m. “They’re exciting and worth coming to. Everyone always puts on a good show, and Freedom is one of the only teams to make playoffs,” Pavlick said.
