With the Freedom Bulldogs wrestling team closing in on the end of their season, the boys look back on some of their favorite moments they created. One of these moments includes becoming back-to-back section champions on Jan. 17 against Central Valley High School. The Bulldogs topped the Warriors with a final score of 41-30.
“My favorite moments from the season were the bus rides to and from tournaments and matches,” junior Gavyn McCray said.
On Jan. 27, the team traveled to Sharon High School to wrestle in the Sharon Duals. The team went against five different teams and came out with a 3-2 record. Winning against Beaver County Christian School with a final score of 74-0. Then, taking on the Sharon High School Tigers, the boys won with a final score of 48-30. Then they took their final win of the day against Knoch with a final score of 48-30. The boys then fell short to Bellefonte and lost with a final score of 54-22 then also against Ringgold with a score of 47-23.
The team then moved on to championship round one at Quaker Valley High School. There, the team wrestled against McGuffy. Despite efforts, McGuffy proved to be formidable opponents, and the boys lost 50-18.
On Feb. 17, the Bulldogs traveled to Keystone Oaks High School to participate in the district AA sections. With three wrestlers coming in fifth place, junior Camden Bruce, freshman Riley Henley, and sophomore Charles Brenckle. Bruce pinned Blackhawks Brecken Vandecoevering in 3 minutes and 48 seconds. Riley Henley secured a win from a forfeit by Blackhawk’s Derrick Reilly. Charles Brenckle won his match after it ended with an overall score of 6-4. Additionally, senior Ryan Kredel and McCray made it to the championship round. Both wrestlers ultimately fell short of their main goal. Both Kredel and McCray placed second.
With the season end in sight, the wrestlers will still travel to District 7 AA at Chartiers Valley High School on Feb. 23 and 24. With many ups and downs, the team still pushed through until the very end. Despite losing their very own Kredel, the boys still look forward to accomplishing more goals and winning more matches next upcoming season.
