This summer I didn’t get to go to many concerts, and the one I did go to wasn’t even my type of music. I’m talking about the Wiz Khalifa show at First Niagara Pavilion. Don’t get me wrong, I like some rap, but definitely not that hardcore “gangsta” rap. You know, the kind that is lyrically offensive and vulgar. I’m not saying all of Wiz’s songs are like that, and there are plenty that I actually enjoy. However, his songs are bad enough that the administration wouldn’t let us raffle off tickets to his show on school property.
Not only do I not particularly like this genre, but it was at a venue I’ve never been to before. However, I loved First Niagara Pavilion. I’ve never been to a pavilion like that before, and it was a really nice place; the crowd on the other hand, not so nice.
I’d have to say that at least 80% of the people there were obnoxiously under the influence. This is neither a fact nor does it have statistical backup, I’m just making a guess based on the 20 or so people that were around me. When I said the crowd wasn’t nice, I didn’t mean they bullied me or anything. I just think some people were having a little too much fun.
Now if you are getting the vibe that I hated this concert and would never go to another rap show again, then I apologize. Even though rap isn’t my favorite music genre, I still had a blast at this concert. I loved the venue, and live Wiz is definitely better than anything I’ve heard on the radio.
What surprised me the most is that he had a full band with him. I really appreciated that, because I thought that the music for rap was all made on an overpriced Mac. Not only was there a full band, but at one point when Wiz was introducing his band they all had crazy awesome solos.
My point to all of this is that if you like rap, and you’ve never been to a rap concert before, then you are missing out. If someone like me, who doesn’t like rap that much can enjoy it live then imagine how much more someone who actually likes rap would get out of it. All in all Wiz Khalifa entertained me, and that’s all that matters.
