The internet is fool of pranks: This year’s April Fool’s Day was filled with online gags

Years ago, people were forced to settle with pranking their friends in person. This April however, many major corporations launched their own April Fool’s Day gags that flooded the internet. Advertisements were launched featuring ridiculous inventions presented as if they were actually purchasable. Regardless of the fact that people cannot actually purchase these new products, the comical and sarcastic advertisements caused a few laughs.

As a parody of the actual Selfie Stick product, which allows you to take a photo of yourself using a camera on a long pole, Petco launched their “Dog on a Stick” advertisement. This whacky product features a metal pole that attaches to a dog harness and holds a camera or phone, which is “activated by a bark or meow”. Petco lists this new invention for fifty dollars, calling it “revolutionary.” In addition, Miz Mooz introduced the new Selfie Shoes, which were a pair of red high heels that featured phone sized pockets at the toes. The video advertisement features two women who placed the phone in one of the shoe slots and lifted their leg to take a photo of themselves.

This April was filled with automated technology pranks and Domino’s Domi-No-Driver is a perfect example. Featuring a motorcycle form factor and robot head and face for design, this gag features “HUNGAR.” (hunger detection and ranging) technology. It claims to deliver with efficiency and detect real-time obstacles. As if that wasn’t unbelievable enough, Cottonelle revealed a new kind of toilet paper designed specifically for left handed people. Neither of these products ever reached the actual design process and were solely used as a funny advertisement.

Volvo, the car company, published an advertisement for a human airbag that activated when smartphone users would bump into objects or other people while not paying attention. This advertisement was published only in Japan as part of the Japanese portion of the Volvo Company.

Google did more than its fair share to contribute to the April Fool’s experience when it introduced “com.google” and Google street view Pac-Man. These pranks were exclusive to April Fool’s Day only, so videos of the actual  gags will have to suffice for future entertainment. While com.google featured a mirrored Google search bar, Google left clues as the best streets to play Pac-Man on their street view experience. In addition, Google also introduced Google Panda in their Japan division, which was an AI that featured hugging and conversation attributes.

In terms of more animal gags, Microsoft announced “Office 2016 For Cats”. The advertisement features a cat using a computer mouse in the shape of an actual one, with the package including programs such as “PowerPounce,” “OneNap” and “Meow”.

Samsung unveiled its Galaxy blade EDGE, which was “The world’s first smartphone with knife capabilities.” If the buyer would enjoy a more premium look, they can purchase the knife with a real ivory tusk handle, which was discovered buried in the North Sea.

This year’s April Fools advertisements were certainly entertaining, and many companies plan to make next year’s even better.
