Members of the Service Club introduced a new charity to the high school this year. The program, Teens for Jeans, partners with the clothing store Aeropostale to collect pairs of jeans for the homeless youth in local communities.
The Teens for Jeans campaign is a part of the “Do Something” organization. Through this program, teens are encouraged to donate old, unwanted jeans in order to give them to those in need. Since the campaign started in 2008, over one million pairs of jeans have been donated.
Junior Amanda Herzog, president of the campaign in Freedom, found out about this from the Do Something website.
“I became a part of dosomething.org about a year ago, and I wanted to do this campaign with them,” Herzog said. She found an opportunity through Service Club to bring it to life.
This is the first event being held by the Service Club this year. Seniors Lauren Dubovi and Desiree Davis, Junior Carley Schroeder, as well as Freshmen Megan and Madeline Kiefer are also actively involved with making this happen. Other schools that have held this fundraiser have raised over 1,000 jeans while doing the drive.
Because it is the first year at Freedom, Herzog’s goal is to raise about 250 pairs of jeans. “There are a lot of good incentives for the Teens for Jeans program,” Herzog said. By donating jeans, coupons for Aeropostale will be awarded.
Jeans can be given to any Service Club member involved in the program.
The program ran all through January, and the Service Club will continue to accept donations until Feb. 13.
