As a physical education teacher, Mr. JC Summers knows that, although sports have a strong connection with many students, not everyone is an athlete. He knows many of Freedom High School’s students like being outdoors, so the idea of offering archery in gym classes has come up. Before a club is started, he said he would like to start teaching archery skills in gym, with Genesis bows and arrows provided by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Many other schools in our area have archery clubs or offer it in physical education classes. Freedom was one of the only schools in Beaver County without this kind of program. Summers would also like to combine the archery classes with some physics and math classes, which both factor into the recreational sport of archery. If a club proves to be successful, the goal will be to move it to a competitive level. The National Archery in the Schools Program, or NASP, sponsors competitions from local and state archery competitions up to a global level for archery. Summers said, “You can take one to ten students or individual classes or 15 to 20 for groups.” “If we could bring students to school to make them better students [through the archery program], it’d be a really cool thing,” Summers said. He hopes that, through this program, students will be encouraged to come to school and have better attendance or even improve grades to stay in the club.
