Softball team halfway through season, on losing streak
With the softball team’s season officially being halfway over, the team, as of April 20, has a record of 1-6. So far this season, the girls have faced off against teams such as Mohawk, Neshannock, Laurel, Riverside and other school districts.
On Wednesday, April 21, the girls officially had their first win of the season against New Brighton. After having a rough beginning three innings, the girls came back in the top of the fourth inning, scoring five runs to bring the score of the game closer with 6-7. After a few innings with both teams scoring, the Bulldogs got on top again when sophomore Shaye Bailey hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning. After that, the team kept their energy up to raise up the score to 11-9 with the Bulldogs on top. This was the teams’ first win of the season, and the players, coaches and fans could not have been happier.
“It felt amazing because that was my first ever home run, and even though I hit an inning late, the girls kept the intensity up and they pulled through in the end to steal the deal. Leyasa pitched three up three down, and then we walked away with our first victory,” sophomore Bailey said.
Even though the girls currently have a losing streak, they have not let this 1-6 record bring them down. Every time the girls get to go out and play on the field, they always are having fun with each other and they always try their hardest, even if they do not expect to win. The next upcoming games for the season are big ones, but the girls have faith in themselves that they may be able to pull out on top. If the girls keep up the same energy that they have had in recent games, they believe they may be able to pull it off.
“I definitely think that if we keep up the energy that we had during the New Brighton game, that we could have a better streak at the end of the season. I definitely hope it happens too,” freshman Annabelle Komlos said.
The team has seen a few new additions since the official start of the season. Senior Victoria Boyce and freshman Hayden Baucan have both joined the team and have been helpful additions this season. This means the team has seen an increase since the season has started, and it gives the Bulldogs something to look forward to. With this increase just as the season has started, the girls are hoping that they are going to be able to expand even more throughout the next few years and become a big part of the district again.
