Smells like team spirit: Students showing school pride
This year from the halls to the fields, school spirit is making a comeback. It’s clear to see the rise in school spirit as you walk down the halls that are overflowing with red and white.
School spirit is a very important part of the high school’s environment and it’s what connects everyone together. It’s like the glue that brings and holds the students as one. No matter how two people feel about one another, on an important game day they will both be wearing the same colors.
“Any sport or even a club should be supported in every way. It’s just really important,” Senior Ryan Edder said.
Having a great, supportive and fun atmosphere in school is going to make learning so much easier. Taking part in activities, such as spirit week, is a great way to put some excitement into a school week, because it allows for students to take a break from all of the seriousness.
“I have to go to school five days a week. For some people that might be torture, but not for me, “ Junior Louis Dubovi said. “Life is what you make it so you have to make school enjoyable.”
School spirit could be the missing link between a student having fun at school or hating it. Participating in clubs or sports is a great way for students to make more friends. If you wouldn’t like to join those activities, join the student section at their event. Then, by going to these events more, athletes are going to be encouraged to perform better because they see how much their fellow classmates care about them.
This year there has definitely been an increase in school spirit for all sporting events. At any volleyball game you can find a group of supportive football players and other students cheering the team on. If you decide to go to a boys’ or girls’ soccer game, there are student sections full of people with signs and playing vuvuzelas, a long plastic horn that produces a loud monotone note, cheering on their fellow classmates. Then, under those Friday night lights, the stadium becomes packed with a sea of red and white for the football games.
Even though there has been an increase in school spirit, it would still be great to have more people participate in school activities. There are many different ideas on how to do this: holding more pep assemblies or allowing students in for free at games if they are participating in the student section could be just a couple.
“I think that every student should belong to something; an activity or a sport, every single student should be part of this school,” Mrs. Carole Hartman said.
School spirit doesn’t just boost the confidence of athletes, but helps unify all of us as a whole Freedom community.
