Class of 2024 finalizes college decisions

College is important to further one’s education, but it is not for everyone. The cost alone is a factor that can drive many people away. Fortunately, there are cheaper alternatives such as technical school, community college and joining the workforce. College and universities allow students to pick a major that interests them as a future job. Students will then study their specialized education in the field they hope to pursue. Along with academic growth, college can be a time for personal growth for young adults who need a push to succeed.

“I feel like committing to Ohio University early was very good for me, because it took a ton of stress off my shoulders. It also helped a ton when it came to finances because I was able to get scholarship information back from the college early,” senior Logan Bickerstaff said. “With those two out of the way, the idea of college became a lot less scary and I could focus more on the things in high school that will benefit me when I get to college.”

Early commitment to college can give a student many opportunities and advantages. Students that are already committed to college have peace of mind knowing they have a secured spot in an institution where they plan to further their education. This peace of mind allows students to finish up high school without added stress about college applications. Committing early is also financially beneficial as students can start saving for specific housing, books or meal plans. Students can secure scholarships and get their financial aid sooner. Early commitment is not only beneficial for the student, but also the family of the student.

“Due to Mercyhurst changing to a Division one soccer team, my academic schedule will change a bit as we will be traveling farther away for longer periods of time. To assist the players, we will now have team tutors that will travel with us as we go away, so we stay on top of work,” senior Morgan Keller said. “My athletic schedule will be more full, but I also feel that my academic support will be higher throughout the program because they will be focused on making sure they are helping their athletes through this big change.”

A big part of the college atmosphere is being part of a community. Being a part of sports teams can provide a sense of friendship and belonging. Feeling included in college can contribute to a well-rounded college experience. Participating in a Division 1 sports team can open doors for future career opportunities and provide additional scholarship opportunities. Attending sporting events can also provide students with a place to feel included and show their school spirit. Committing early and participating in sports while in college can ease students into their freshman year by providing them with peace.
