NHS fundraisers collect for charities
Freedom’s chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) has been running fundraisers in the high school and around the community to help raise money and supplies for charities and people in need.
In the last two weeks of November, NHS held a Thanksgiving canned food drive, and all of it’s proceeds went to the Baden Methodist Church Food Bank. NHS’s fundraisers are dependent on the participation of the students, faculty, and Freedom community.
Throughout the month of December, they held a fundraiser benefiting the Beaver County Women’s Shelter. They collected money for Toys for Tots by holding a collection basket outside of the band concerts. All of the proceeds and supplies collected by NHS will be given to charity.
“We are really hoping that people give us a good turnout for the Beaver County Women’s Shelter. [We want to] help out these poor women that so desperately need our help, especially before Christmas,” Mrs. K.C. Hastings, the teacher representative of NHS, said.
Students were asked to pick an ornament off of the Christmas tree located on the second level of the high school. On each ornament is a Christmas gift wish from a person in the local Beaver County women’s shelter. The requests range from basic necessities, such as toilet paper and shampoo, to nail polish.
“We are trying to do more stuff that is community involved this year. For the Relay for Life later this year, we are hoping for a big turnout from not only Freedom students, but the community.” NHS President, Senior Raylen Welling, said.
They have hopes that Relay for Life will be one of their biggest fundraisers of the year and have planned lots of advertising for it. NHS members are still waiting on school board approval and community and school support to secure the event. If there’s approval, there will be multiple meetings throughout the year for the different teams that sign up for the event. All proceeds collected go to the American Cancer Society.
“I am so grateful for the students that have participated in the fundraisers. I hope that more students continue to get involved and support the great causes NHS strives to assist,” NHS Vice President, Senior Michelle Keith said.
