New classes for a new year: FHS adds new courses to their curriculum
Freedom High School has added a total of six new classes to the curriculum that students may be more interested in taking. The new classes include CCBC Public Speaking, AP Biology, Health and Wellness, Weight Training and Leadership, Integrated Keystone Math and afternoon CTC classes.
The CCBC Public Speaking course is offered to 11-12th graders, and is taught by Mr. Aaron Fitzpatrick. This course emphasizes speech preparation and a variety of speaking experiences that are designed to increase the speaker’s capability. Because it’s a college course, students can receive college credits after completing the course.
AP Biology, taught by Mrs. Brandi Burger, is only offered to students in 12th grade. This course is designed to help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology and an appreciation of science as a process.
The Health and Wellness class is a new physical education course offered this year to 10-12th grade students, taught by Mrs. Lisa Woods. Along with the Health and Wellness class, a Weight Training and Leadership course is also being offered and is taught by Mr. Chris Coennan.
“I feel that the students in my Weight Training and Leadership class are motivated both intrinsically and extrinsically. They not only push themselves, they push each other and nobody passes judgment of how much or how little another person can lift. Every student that takes this class will see great benefits by the end of the school year,” Coennan said.
This year both Mrs. KC Hastings and Mrs. Amy Isanogle are teaching Integrated Keystone Math. This class has been put in place to help students who did not pass the algebra keystone test, and prepares the students to ensure they can pass the Keystone when they retake it.
Another new course offered is afternoon CTC. In years past, Freedom has always had CTC as an option for students, but it was always during the first half of the day. Freedom now offers CTC during the second half of the day as well. “I like ending my day with something I enjoy, instead of class work,” Junior Courtney Boehmer said.
Altogether all of these classes have acquired a lot of interest and will most likely be offered again next year.
