On Jan. 17 and 18, eight students from Freedom High School traveled to New Brighton High School for County Chorus. The students involved were Seniors Savannah Angelo, Brandon Bionda, Jesse Gaunt, Zach Malinak; Junior Hunter Bonzo; and Sophomores Josh Battaglia, Micki Friend and Maura Lehockey. Upon arrival, the students played a game to find the person who had their name tag and proceeded to practice singing for hours on end. Some songs included “Somebody to Love” by Queen, “Africa” by Toto, “Bring Him Home” from the movie Les Misérables. “It was cool singing modern songs,” Gaunt said. There were auditions for students to get solos in certain songs and Gaunt was selected to sing a solo in “Somebody to Love” by Queen. Judges announced the soloists hours after the audition, but it was only a short time before the actual performance. The Freedom students were very proud of Gaunt. “Claps for Jesse. He just tried [for the part] on a whim and got it,” Bonzo said. The group performed the night of Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. “It was a long day, but a good experience,” Angelo said.
