As the girls soccer team’s regular season play comes close to an end, the team is hopeful about the rest of the season. Sitting at the top of their section, the team has clinched a playoff spot. In the playoffs, if the team does not win, they do not advance, making the games very stressful. Being that they have won numerous section titles and have been in the playoffs for countless years, they are no strangers to the playoffs. The team has worked towards the playoffs for the whole season and have put in countless hours of work day in and day out.
“If we just do a little more work on our chemistry, then we’re good. I believe we just need to rely on each other more and believe that others are able to fulfill their roles. I’m also really hoping that my last year is all that I hoped for with an amazing group of girls, and that we are able to reach our goals,” senior captain, Shaye Bailey, said.
The girls soccer team has built a legacy under their Coach, Colin Williams. Since Williams has been in Freedom, they have won the section championship for the past eight years. Having made the playoffs this year, the team reflects on their past successes and achievements to help them reach playoff success.
“Having players on the team with past playoff experience really helps. When adding new players to the team, the past experience gives the team an extra boost. Knowing what we can accomplish from past years gives us the mentality we need to win,” Williams said.
On Sept. 14, the girls faced off against the Montour Spartans in a non-conference matchup where they lost 3-1. Following the bout versus Montour, the girls picked up back-to-back section wins. A two goal victory against the Eden Christian Warriors on Sept. 18 and a 7-1 victory against South Side. The girls then traveled to Hopewell on Sept. 21 to take on the Vikings in a game they won 5-0. They then faced off in a section match against Riverside on Sept. 27, where they won 3-1. In the following week, they took on two section teams in back-to-back days, picking up an 11-0 win against Mohawk on Oct. 4, and a 4-1 victory against the Sewickley Academy Panthers on Oct. 5. In the girls annual pink out game, they scored five goals in a non-conference victory against Oak Glen. With four more games to go in the season, the girls hope to pick up a few more victories to carry some momentum into the playoffs.
