The girls soccer teams’ regular season is coming to an end, and they are hopeful for the rest of their season. Living up to last season’s expectations, they are advancing to the playoffs. The team sits second in their section. For playoffs, if a team does not win, then they are eliminated. The team has been struggling with many injuries, but their overall morale is higher than ever.
“Our season did not start off as strong as we had hoped, but we are getting better as the season goes on,” Riley Tokar (12) said. “I am hoping that we get a good seed in the playoffs and I hope that we can make another run this year, like we have done in years past.”
With high hopes, the girls took on Eden Christian in a section game, on Sept. 16, and beat them with a score of 3-1. After the win against Eden Christian, the girls had high hopes for their next few section games.
The team faced Riverside High School on Sept. 23, and suffered a loss with a score of 1-0. During this section game, the team’s main goalie, Trinity Vojtko (11) got injured when trying to save a ball. With Trinity Vojtko out for the regular season, her sister Rylie Vojtko (10) stepped up to the challenge of being their main goalie and has not disappointed.
“I was really disappointed when I knew that I had injured my collarbone, but I knew that Rylie was going to be able to step up and take over my position while I am out,” Trinity Vojtko said. “So far Rylie has been doing great for the time that she came in, but I hope to be back in goal when we make our way through the playoffs.”
Following the Riverside game, the girls took on Our Lady of Sacred Heart (OLSH) on Sept. 25, in another section game, and came out on top with a score of 5-4. With the team coming out on top against OLSH, they had high hopes for the remainder of the season.
Later that week, on Sept. 28, the girls took on Winchester High School in an exhibition game, but suffered a loss with a score of 2-0. Since this match was an exhibition game and not a section game, it did not fluctuate their standings within the section.
Following their game against Winchester High School, the girls were matched up against Mohawk High School on Oct. 2 and did not disappoint. Ultimately, the girls took home the win, with a final score of 3-0.
“I have high hopes for the rest of the season, as I think that we are doing very well so far,” Rylie Vojtko said.
Next, the girls took on another section game against South Side High School on Oct. 7 and took yet another victory, with a score of 4-2.Finally, the girls took on Eden Christian High School, once again, on Oct. 10, and took home another victory against them, with a score of 5-4.
The girls are set to have their first playoff game on Oct. 21 and have high hopes for the game. With the team on a win streak, the girls expect to do well in their playoff games and hope to advance through them.
