Scoring goals might seem sufficient enough for any typical soccer team, but achieving goals set for the year was the real task at hand in the 2012 girls’ soccer season. Setting the bar higher than simply winning games, Senior Kelsie Matlick wanted to have the team working together, getting closer as a family, and making it to playoffs. The team certainly has worked together, ending their season with a record of 4 wins and 10 losses. Family dinners and team sleepovers were a must throughout the season. This bonding time was so important, Matlick hopes underclassmen will carry on the tradition next season. Their loss against Neshannock with a final score of 3-2 led to the heartbreaking news of the team not being able to make it to playoffs. “I wish we would have gone to playoffs, but since we are not, it’s nice to still have everyone so close. Most teams would probably have broken apart at the end of the season,” Matlick said. Junior Niki Vargo said, “Everyone would have loved to make it to playoffs this year, but we still had a great season and had a lot of fun.” Even though they did not make it to playoffs, on Oct. 11, the girls ended their season on a high note, winning 4-2 against New Brighton. “I think that next year we’re all going to work hard and try to do better than we did this year,” Vargo said.
