As you read this, Ms. Ruthanne Gudzan along with several students are leaving the United States to tour Spain. “I am very excited. I’m worried about the flight being long, though. It’s an eight hour flight,” Sophomore Katie Shvach said. Two years ago, after the trip to Costa Rica, Gudzan made the decision that she would like to take Freedom students to Spain. There were some concerns at first such as cost, time of year and if enough students would participate. “I was surprised at how many students [are] going, especially after only having four go to Costa Rica,” Gudzan said. There are a total of 14 people going to Spain: 11 students, Gudzan, Mrs. Kaylee Haggerty and a parent of one of the students as chaperones. The total cost of the trip is approximately $2,700. In order to raise this money, there were several fundraisers including T-shirts, Anderson’s candies and Yankee candles. In the beginning, students had three options for general trip dates: fall, spring or summer. The majority of students wanted to go during the summer, but this presented the problem that seniors could not go on the trip, for they would have graduated already. Scheduling the trip in the fall wouldn’t give as much fundraising time, so spring was the only option left. This proved to be beneficial though because now students going on the trip are only missing one and a half days of school because the trip is over Easter break. Overall students are eager to be going on the trip. “I’m excited. It will be a lot of fun and something new,” Sophomore Kristy Sturgess said.
