FASD news in brief: Points of interest from the April school board meeting
CASH BASH RECAP
Mr. John Cummins opened the April 16 board meeting with a recap about this year’s annual Cash Bash and showed the board a video made by students that will be presented to the Freedom CARES Foundation, who created the Cash Bash, to show their appreciation towards the money that was raised through the event.
The Freedom CARES Foundation first started this annual event three years ago with the intention to raise money for students in all organizations from sports to theater. Each year the Cash Bash has been able to raise more money with this year’s amount being around 29,000 dollars. The event has raised 82,000 dollars total in the course of all three years.
Cummins informed the board that the event has actually gathered so much support from community members that Center Stage will no longer be able to host the event because there are too many people interested in going, to fit in that venue. Due to this development Freedom CARES is looking into a new place to host the event that will be held sometime this fall.
Beaver, New Brighton and Moon school districts have decided to organize their own Cash Bashes in the coming school year after seeing the success it has had in our school district.
2015-2016 SCHOOL CALENDAR
The 2015-2016 school calendar has been officially released with in-service days planned for Sept. 1 through Sept. 4 and students first day of school being Sept. 8. The start date is slightly later than in previous years due to the elementary school construction, which should be done in time for the student’s first day. The school calendar includes four days off over Thanksgiving, eight days off for Christmas and New Years and two to three for the Easter holiday depending on the number of snow days. The last day of school and commencement will be June 10.
TECHNOLOGY HELP DESK UPDATE
Following the article written in last month’s newspaper, the help desk run by Consensus will now be open every day for students during first and second block compared to being open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays previously. This help desk is located in Mr. Tom Hickey’s office.
MIDDLE SCHOOL PSSA’S
Middle School Principal Frank Hernandez talked to the board about the efforts being made by middle school teachers and staff to help get students ready to take the PSSAs.
Monday, April 13 an assembly was held in the middle school gymnasium to try and get students excited for the PSSAs. They would be taking the tests the following day. This assembly included each grade level getting to participate in one game in front of the rest of the school. Each grade level was able to pick what activity in which they would be participating. In between games two fifth/sixth graders and two seventh/eighth graders would be selected to answer a PSSA practice question. If they got the answer correct, they had the opportunity to pie one of seventeen teachers in the face. Several teachers also donned costumes during the assembly to help get students excited about their upcoming standardized tests.
