As the bocce season is right around the corner, the team has begun preparing for the upcoming season. The bocce team has began to hold practices to learn the game and brush up on their skills from last year. Some members of the team have also attended seminars hosted by the Special Olympics on how to be a leader and create an inclusive environment.
Being a part of the bocce team means being a leader, not only on the team, but in the school. Due to the fact it is the only intentionally inclusive sport within the school, being a leader and an advocate for people with disabilities is part of being on the team. The Special Olympics holds seminars for people to learn how to bring inclusivity and understanding into teams and schools. These seminars have experienced speakers who are able to bring a new perspective to the issue of inclusivity and show people how to address it. Attending these seminars helps players and coaches learn how to assist their teammates and be advocates within the school.
Last year, the team lost four seniors who had competed with the team long term. In bocce, teams are allowed to have ten members. However, they have chosen to stick with the previously allowed eight members. With this change, half of the players will be new to the sport and the team. The team is happy to welcome new players to the team and build relationships with them.
“I am excited to see people and have new players on the team,” Hailey Stinar (12) said.
Bocce brings students together by showing them that everyone is able to be included and welcomed into this environment. It also shows them the importance of working together to help each other. It also shows spectators that both nondisabled and disabled people are capable of working together to be succsessful.
“[Bocce] is the only unified sport at the school, so it means an inclusive team of individuals with and without disabilities,” Ms. Abygail Pritchard, one of the coaches, said. “This allows all students to work towards a common goal.”
Last year the team worked hard and made to the last round of playoffs at Geneva College. This year with half the team being new to the sport they still have high expectations. While the team recogizes that it might be more challenging they are still looking to make it playoffs. They are hoping that with practice and help from returning members everyone will be ready to make it to playoffs this season. While this is their goal they are still looking forward to having fun this season and making new friends.
This year, the bocce team is excited to begin the season and showcase their skills. On Dec. 21, they have their first game against Beaver. At this game, they will be able to show the preparation and work they have put in so far. This is only the beginning for the team, as they have many games and many memories to come.
“I am excited to roll the red ball,” Cayden Signorelli (11) said.
